Rotary Club of Calcutta Avyanna was chartered on Friday, 16th June 2017 — the realization of a long-standing dream of a handful of passionate women with a common vision: to give back to society and uplift the underserved, through a recognized and trusted platform. And what better platform than Rotary!
Since inception, we have grown from strength to strength and today proudly stand at 36 committed members. While we wholeheartedly believe in peaceful coexistence and collaboration with gentlemen, our development journey has only further strengthened our resolve to remain an all-women Club — a distinction we continue to enjoy exclusively in Rotary District 3291.
Driven by a shared passion and unwavering determination, our focus has always been Women Empowerment and Child Development. Most of our projects are designed with this core mission in mind — whether it was setting up and running Ankuran, a school inside the Dumdum Correctional Home for the children of women inmates, or conducting Dance Therapy, Spoken English, and Yoga sessions aimed at reformation for the inmates themselves. Vocational training in Kantha stitch and Jute craft has also been offered to support the sustainable rehabilitation of these women.
Our impact has grown over the years, and so have our initiatives. Some of our recent and ongoing projects include:
- Angrezi Medium: A unique digital initiative where urban students mentor rural children in spoken English, bridging the education gap and building cross-cultural understanding.
- Solar Panel Installation: Bringing renewable energy to the Dumdum Correctional Home, ensuring consistent access to electricity while promoting environmental consciousness.
- Sanitation Projects: Construction of 50+ new toilets and upgradation of an additional 50+ in rural and semi-urban areas, fostering dignity, hygiene, and health in marginalized communities.
- Cervical Cancer Vaccination Drive: Successfully vaccinating 300+ adolescent girls, taking a significant step toward preventive healthcare and raising awareness about women’s health.
We believe in working together with compassion, courage, and commitment — striving to touch as many lives as possible, in India and beyond, with the same spirit of service that defines Rotary. As we look ahead, we remain excited and ready for many more milestones to come.
